The best of two known examples
Lot 200
Trajan, 98-117. Denarius (Silver, 21 mm, 3.40 g, 6 h), Rome, autumn 116-August 117. IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIM AVG GER DAC PARTHICO Laureate bust of Trajan to right, with aegis on left shoulder and bare chest showing. Rev. PARTHICO P M TR P COS VI P P S•P•Q•R• Felicitas standing front, head to left, holding short caduceus in her right hand and cornucopiae with her left. BMC -. Cohen -. RIC -. Woytek 583[H]t.1 (this coin, shown on plate 116). Extremely rare, the better of only two known examples. An interesting hybrid issue with a most impressive portrait. Extremely fine.

From the collection of Yves Gunzenreiner, ex Münz Zentrum Rheinland 134, 30 August 2006, 489, NAC 23, 19 March 2002, 1541 and Aretusa 2, 13 May 1994, 351.

This is a particularly interesting coin, as it combines an old obverse die from Woytek's group 17 (February-autumn116) with a reverse die from his group 19 (autumn 116-August 117). The mint must have either not noticed, or not cared about, the doubling of the title PARTHICO.
